There’s something about cooking (read: helping mum cook) in the kitchen that makes kids feel all grown-up. My daughter Sarah is no exception. The other day I had one of these rare ‘baking moods’ as I like to call them. Out came the works – flour, butter, salt, eggs.
First, we combined together the flour and salt (in the right proportions) in a big bowl. While Sarah was entrusted with the task of mixing it vigorously, me and my electric mixer set about beating the concoction of butter, granulated sugar, egg and vanilla extract till it became fluffy and light in color.
Next came the part where we had to roll the dough into small balls. While I did the rolling part (trying to make sure that the cookies were more or less the same size and shape), Sarah had the time of her life rolling the ‘cookie balls’ in sprinkles… I think she overdid that part ‘coz I could hardly see any dough once she was done; it was just bright blues and pinks, greens and yellows!
We then transferred the set cookies to the freezer for half an hour, lined neatly on parchment-lined baking sheets. By the time we finished the cleaning up of the kitchen counter and all, it was time to bake them in the oven. Just 15 minutes of baking and we were done! I did have a hard time keeping both kids away from the wire rack while the cookies were cooling off. And when my husband got home that evening, he was welcomed by the daughter and a plate of freshly baked cookies in vibrant hues, with the proclamation (but of course) that she was the ‘chef’!
Good times :)
