The Fourth of July fell on a weekend this year, which meant that the whole family (including the better half) was at home together. The kids knew it was a special day of sorts. And so, the crafty streak that I have led from one thing to the next and in no time at all we were all happily immersed in this exciting ‘Fireworks’ activity I found online on this website.
1. We started off by filling a glass jar three-fourths with warm water.
2. In a separate bowl, we then mixed 3-4 tablespoons of oil and several drops of different colors of food coloring (3 drops each of blue, green, red and yellow).
3. We then used a fork to gently mix the oil and food coloring together.
4. The resulting oil mixture was then carefully and gently poured into the glass jar filled with water.
The result – the food coloring slowly sank out of the oil and into the water. When this happened, it expanded and began to mix with the other colors, resulting in colorful ‘fireworks’ inside the jar!
History has it that in Philadelphia, 13 rockets were fired on July 4th, 1777 to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies. This set the trend of fireworks display each year. And this year we had our own little fireworks celebration!
