I stumbled across an article that talked about how a study shows that intellectual development in kids who read is higher, especially if they read for pleasure. This does not come as a surprise, yes. We know kids benefit from reading. Everyone benefits from reading. But this study does make you sit up and take notice. My kids don’t know it yet but they will be reading more this year. I have rounded up a few fun reading games and books to get them going.
Here are all the reasons why you should encourage the reading habit in kids.
· Reading builds vocabulary. This allows kids to express themselves better. Good language skills can mean better communication – an essential life skill. Additionally, they need to learn to remember these words and make connections. More exercise for the brains.
· Kids who read different types of books will be exposed to new ideas that may further open them up to experience life creatively and come up with innovative solutions.

· Kids who are capable of reading on their own can grow to be independent learners. Their learning will not be restricted to classrooms and guidance from others.
· Reading is a great way to improve concentration because your mind cannot wander and kids have to be quiet. It does not allow for multi-tasking or juggling between many activities.

· Reading is the next best thing to traveling as it allows kids to experience life outside their comfort zone. They learn about new ways of thinking, cultures, beliefs, emotions – all of which cannot be experienced by one individual in a single lifetime.
· On the same note, kids who read can be more empathetic because when they read they can experience a character’s emotions more fully. Things that often go unsaid are spelled out on paper. Kids have to put a pause on thinking about themselves and consider others.

· Reading also hones critical thinking skills. An exposure to different ways of living and ideas can make kids ask questions rather than simply accept the status quo. This leads to innovation and change rather than a stagnant way of living.
· Reading is a fundamental skill. Kids will need this skill to read and understand their academic books across a range of subjects. Reading comprehension abilities contribute to academic excellence.
If this is not enough, reading is a leisure activity that is very relaxing and reduces stress. So, more power to the written word and reading!
