The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term ‘gamification’ thus – the process of adding games or gamelike elements to something so as to encourage participation. It could even sometimes act as an incentive for people to participate and make positive lifestyle changes, such as losing weight for instance. And when it comes to the gamification of education for kids, a number of renowned schools and universities around the world are tapping this very channel in order to help kids focus on one single task at a time.
A fascinating study was carried out by the Science Mag recently which arrived upon this conclusion: ‘The average modern human attention span is eight seconds. Goldfish manage nine.’ And if you take into account kids’ attention spans, it’ll probably be way less than what an average modern human adult manages.
Leave alone homeschoolers (like our family) using educational games as a part of their curriculum; gamification of the classroom is something that has been doing the rounds lately. Research suggested that games based on rewarding learning outcomes were the most popular amongst students. It can all be summed up perfectly in the following observation made by a teacher who tried gamification for the first time in her classroom:
“The students rush to class even though it is Maths. They often tell me it is the highlight of their day.”
