This Monday, April 11, was celebrated as National Pet Day in the country. Recently, our family has been seriously considering the feasibility of bringing another member home – a family pet. While I would be absolutely happy just playing virtual pet games and not getting any ball of fur home, the opinions of other family members’ seem pretty divided on the issue.

The husband has this quote from Charles M. Schulz (the popular Peanuts cartoonist) stuck in his head and makes sure all of us hear it several times a day: “Happiness is a warm puppy.” He says dogs are friendly, loving and loyal; agreed. But when I point out things like: what if they tear up the carpet and turn the whole house upside down, what if our home always has wet footprints in all rooms, who will be responsible for potty training the dog, I get a mere, “We’ll manage together” sort of reply. And his latest (and by far the strongest) argument in favor of keeping a dog? “The daily long morning and evening walks with the doggy will help me keep fitter.”
Of course, I don’t deign to reply.

Contrary to the husband’s argument, my daughter claims that we should keep a furry kitten as a pet since cats don’t need to be walked and are happy enough within the confines of the home. Unlike dogs, cats can always sit on your laps. Cats don’t bark. What’s more, cats are ‘cute’. Okay now I agree that both puppies and kittens can be cute, but a fully grown German Shepherd or a huge cat with scary blue eyes is not at all cute, as far as I am concerned. Our neighbors have two cats as pets from the last one year and their whole house is full of cat hair – these furry creatures shed a lot.
So there.

How, in this wide, wide world can someone keep calm and consider keeping a hamster as a pet? My son says they are cuddly, I disagree. According to him, they are friendly; I say no way. And entertaining? I’m pretty sure a rodent cannot be entertaining enough to be kept as a pet at home, no matter how wonderful they look running on their hamster wheels. I was reading about hamsters the other day and got to know that if they aren’t handled gently enough, they may bite as well. And naturally, come what may, I am not having a biting rodent as a pet in my house.
The son has been told in no uncertain terms that he can have scores of hamsters in every nook and cranny of home – provided it is his house once he grows up and not mine.
I have my own arguments for why keeping pets is a nuisance, such as this. It pretty much sums up what I think about pets as a whole.
What do you think – yay or nay?
