I couldn’t agree more. I feel homeschooling is all about involving the child in different ways, so that he/she can grasp a subject better. This is where traditional schooling loses a point when compared to homeschooling; in a class of 30-40 kids, for instance, not all the children feel involved at any given time. As a result, some race ahead and do well, while others are unfortunately left behind to fend for themselves.
How do I involve my kids in the process of homeschooling them and making them learn new things? We turn cookie-baking sessions into impromptu math lessons, where my son is entrusted with the task of carefully counting the cookies (fresh out of the oven) before dividing them equally and putting them away in jars. We grow flowers together, where my daughter is responsible for one section of the garden and my son for another; and they learn how to tend to plants as well as identify the many different plant species. We set aside some time everyday for a simple science experiment that can be done by them themselves and then note down our observations. We sing, we paint, we craft and we learn together… and it’s so much fun.
A couple of years ago, when I was working as an elementary school teacher, I used to feel that I have the best job in the world. And now, as a homeschooling mom, I feel more satisfied than ever… Now I have the best job in the world. :)
