A book that has been translated into more than 70 languages all around the world, considered to be the epitome of ‘literary nonsense’ (as we like to call it) at its best that we all have grown to love; a story that has everything which could capture a child’s imagination – weird fantasies in a make-believe world, a wild journey, crazy characters – in short, a ‘wonderland’ of sorts; a tale of a little girl who gets easily bored, a rabbit hole that leads to a mystical land, sleepy mice, an evil queen and magic mushrooms… Rings a bell?
Yes, I’m talking about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the classic penned by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, under the pen name of Lewis Carroll. The adventures were published by the author way back in the year 1865, and the fact that the book hasn’t gone out of print even once since then bears testimony to the popularity of the story even today.

I personally have a very old relationship with dear old Alice. When I was about seven years old, we had a play staged at school wherein I (very proud of my feat, till date) portrayed our cute little protagonist. I still remember prancing into the Mad Hatter’s tea party, sipping on non-existent tea from exquisite cups and saucers in the company of the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit, and then skipping along to the beautiful garden of the sinister red Queen of Hearts who yelled at the sight of me: “Off with their heads!” Needless to say, I was the star of the play!
January 27 happened to be Lewis Carroll’s birthday and hence the memories came flooding in. I still have a favorite quote from the book written right on the front page of my diary, which says:
‘You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret, all the best people are.’
