Last weekend, my kids and I were discussing about what we should do for Halloween this year. All the usual things came up – dressing up in scary costumes, decorating the house, telling ghost stories, going trick or treating, carving or painting pumpkins and the like. There were also some new ideas like ‘We will play scary video games all day!’ (This was my son, who came up with this proclamation while jumping up and down on our brand new sofa). And then it suddenly struck me how times have changed from the time when we were kids.
My son wants to be Spiderman while my daughter has decided that she would be the Snow Queen Elsa (her favorite character from Frozen). I offered to be her personal tailor and design the costume at home but no, she would not hear of it. She wants one particular fairy costume she saw in the window of a shop and that’s that. Wand and tiara included. Period.
I distinctly remember my mom dragging me as a little girl through piles of fun plastic masks and capes at shops the weekend before Halloween. I remember once having to use an old brown sack with two holes in place of eyes as my Halloween costume since there was no time to come up with anything else and me happily prancing around all day in it. I remember having difficulty breathing through the tiny breathing hole in my devil mask but refusing to take it off, come what may. And I also remember the jack-o’-lanterns we so carefully used to place out on our porch and feeling proud that ours had the scariest grin on his face.
Times may have changed but the Halloween spirit definitely hasn’t. So start loading up on candy right away – you never know how many ghosts and witches come knocking on your front door this Friday!
When witches go riding and black cats are seen,
The moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween!
