‘There is magic in the night when pumpkins glow by moonlight.’
And it’s that time of the year again, when the pumpkins will glow bright with their eerie yet sinister smiles plastered on their faces! Halloween is right around the corner and hence I decided to come up with a list of our favorite movies which would be ideal to watch along with the entire family on this spooky occasion.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Anyone who is a great fan of the Peanuts gang will love this animated flick which has Charlie Brown and his friends all dressing up in scary Halloween costumes while Linus has other plans of his own; he will wait in the pumpkin patch and hold an all-night vigil for the Great Pumpkin - for what is Halloween without that? Watching the fun group go apple-bobbing and trick-or-treating is a treat in itself. Rest assured, each member of the family is bound to have a smile on his or her face once the end credits roll.
Harry Potter
Isn’t Halloween all about broomsticks and cauldrons, witchcraft and wizardry and all things magic? Well, then how can our very own Harry Potter movie series not find its name in the list? The protagonist and his friends’ adventures in the wizarding world are unparalleled. It’s like a fantasy roller-coaster with all the thrills at the right places. Dark, exciting, funny, humorous, mysterious, stirring… the list is endless.
How to Train Your Dragon
Wherever fire-breathing dragons are involved, there’s bound to be an air of spookiness and fear. But then enter a group of entertaining young dragon riders who consider the dragons their beloved pets and the entire picture changes. Exhilarating 3D flight sequences aboard the dragons over the blue seas and high mountain peaks, comedic moments thanks to a bunch of extremely amusing and fun-loving characters in the group and dragon games based on the movie characters themselves – this one is a complete package.
The Addams Family

The Addams Family
An eccentric family of sorts which does complete justice to the tagline of the film – ‘Weird is relative’. Each family member is creepy and mysterious in their own unique way. A critic summed it up very aptly when he described the movie in two words: ‘Ghoulishly hilarious’. It is a well-known fact that the said movie was based on a TV series back in the ‘80s, but not many are aware of the fact that this TV series itself was based on a series of one-panel cartoons by Charles Addams in The New Yorker which made its debut in the year 1937.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
This Steven Spielberg classic had to be a part of my list (I love it so very much!) even if for the simple reason that one of its most popular and iconic scenes takes place on the day of Halloween. Needless to say, Spielberg’s story is nothing short of magical and akin to pure fantasy – how three kids give shelter and take care of an extra-terrestrial being from outer space. My all-time favorite scene? The silhouette of Elliott and E.T. pedaling across a wonderful full moon. And here is proof that this evergreen classic is still going strong.
Happy Halloween, folks!
